PLEASURE CRAFT EVERYBODY WANTS SOME

For his debut single, Canadian newcomer Sam Lewis, aka Pleasure Craft, has opted for “a song about ambition and guilt,” a stirring mix of emotions that coalesces in this synth-jazz beauty titled ‘Everybody Wants Some’. With a vocal akin to Matt Maltese and MONEY’s Jamie Lee, Lewis falls into sighed jokes and sophisticated lines, such as “Everybody wants some, and I keep giving it away, giving it away / Take me out the back door and let me fly, let me fly.” These feelings of pressure, escapism, longing and dream chasing are implied at every turn, not only through the lyrics, but also the carefully constructed instrumentation. We can feel the energy building throughout the first minute as drum taps, sweeping ‘80s-era synths, thudding electronic keys and reverberating guitars intensify, eventually bursting into that climactic chorus. Every now and then, you’ll hear a cinematic trumpet, played by Lewis himself, who moved from his home of Saltspring Island (British Columbia) to Toronto to study the instrument as a jazz disciple at Humber College. It’s here where the young student met producer and drummer Andrew Taylor, who Lewis collaborated with to create this first taste of Pleasure Craft. - HT
